Your data
Delete my data
Most of your Ember data never leaves your phone, so the fastest way to erase it is right there in the app — instantly, in your own hands. If you turned on the cloud, you get to choose exactly what comes off our servers, and whether you keep your account. This page walks you through each choice.
Fastest — erase it on your device Instant · in the app
By default, your conversations and diary live only on your device — there's no copy with us to ask for. So the quickest, most complete deletion is in your own hands and takes effect immediately:
- Delete a single entry or memory using the app's in-app controls — it's removed on your device right away.
- Erase everything from the app's settings, or uninstall Ember, which removes the app's on-device data (subject to any backups your own phone keeps).
This data is encrypted under a key derived from your recovery kit — held by you, not by us. There's nothing on our side to reach, so we couldn't delete it for you even if you asked. That's by design, and it's why this route is instant and entirely yours.
Turned on the cloud? Choose what to delete
If you claimed an account and switched on sync/backup, a copy of your content also lives with us as end-to-end-encrypted data. You decide how much of that to remove — and whether you keep your account:
-
Option A — Delete my account and all my data In-app or request · final after ~14 days
Closes your account and erases the cloud copy: we delete the account and the key that unlocks your encrypted backups, which renders those backups permanently unreadable. A short reversal window (about 14 days) guards against a deletion made in a hard moment; after that, it's final. Where account deletion is surfaced in the app you can start it yourself and it runs straight away; either way, or by the request below, we complete it within one month. Your on-device copy is separate — clear it with the “Fastest” route above.
-
Option B — Delete only my cloud data, keep my account By request · one month
Erases the synced/backup copy on our servers while your account stays open — and your on-device copy stays on your phone, so you keep using Ember exactly as before. There isn't a self-serve button for this yet, so we do it on request and confirm within one month.
Keep a copy first (recommended). Because the full data already lives on your device, you don't need us to hand it back — export it in the app (your diary and content are assembled on-device, never uploaded to us), then send the Option-B request. You keep the complete copy while the cloud version is removed.
Send your request
Pick what you want removed and we'll pre-fill the email for you. This opens your own email app with the message ready to review and send — nothing is sent automatically, and nothing on this page confirms a deletion. You stay in control of what you send, and the request only becomes real once you send it and we act on it.
What we need, and what happens next
- Tell us which option applies — A, B, or website email — so we reach the right records and don't remove more (or less) than you meant.
- For an account, include the email address you signed up with. We may need to confirm your identity before we act, so we don't delete the wrong person's data.
- We respond within one month of your request, as the UK GDPR requires, and confirm once it's done. If a request is complex we'll tell you and may take up to two further months, keeping you posted.
- No charge, and asking costs you nothing else — deletion doesn't affect any lawful processing that already happened.
Want a copy of your data before you delete it? You can export your own content from within the app at any time — it's assembled on your device, so you keep the full copy without it ever passing through us. For more on your rights and how your data is handled, see the Privacy Policy.
